The ghosts of Pearl Harbor

On December 8, 2010, in Ghosts & Hauntings, by James

It was December 7, 1941. For many Americans the world was about to change and the date would remain fixed in the national consciousness.

At 7:48 a.m the Japanese airforce launched its surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Within a few hours 2,402 US personnel were killed and 1,282 were wounded.

Ford Island NAS

The place that suffered the highest casualties was Ford Island Naval Air Station because of the battleship moorings surrounding the island.

This attack prompted the US to enter the Second World War.

Ford Island is now home to a number of residents and tourists are able to visit the island to tour the USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum.

From just after the war until now, these residents and tourists have reported strange things from the island.

Many have made reports of disembodied voices in their homes. Some report unexplained footsteps coming from empty rooms. Others have reported objects moving around and being stacked in corners.

Other phenomena include lights and appliances which turn on and off by themselves, ghostly apparitions and strange feelings of sadness and dread.

Hickam Air Force Base (Ford Island)

On the site of the Hickam Air Force Base sits a building – the Pacaf HQ. This building still has bullet holes in the walls from the attack.

Inside the buildings a number of soldiers were killed and injured.

It is said that people who go there in quiet times can hear the moaning of the dying soldiers and sometimes even the sounds of war.

These have been some reports of people seeing the ghosts of dead soldiers wandering the corridors – still dressed in their fatigues.

Doors have been known to open and close without explanation and lights and appliances turn on and off without anyone being near.

Of all the haunted roads in the world, Clinton Road in Passaic County, New Jersey may just be the most mysterious.

Clinton Road runs in a generally north-south direction, beginning at Route 23 near Newfoundland and running roughly 10 miles to Upper Greenwood Lake.

Over the years, the road has gained a reputation for its many legends of all things weird and paranormal. There are legends of ghosts, witches, Satanists, murders and even the Ku Klux Klan.

Most of the land alongside the road is undeveloped woodland. The road itself is just a regular two lane road and is a little off the beaten track.

Ghosts

There are a number of ghosts which are said to haunt Clinton Road and the surrounding areas.

Driving the road late at night, it is said that you could encounter the ghostly truck. It’s headlights will follow you on your journey until you reach the highway, at which point the lights mysteriously vanish.

There is a bridge at the nearby reservoir where you could meet up with the ghost of a drowned boy. It is said that he drowned below the bridge and now if you throw a penny into the water, the boy will hurl it back at you a few moments later.

A variation of the ghost boy says that he was run over by a car near the bridge. If you lean over the edge of the bridge, ghostly hands will push you into the water in order to save you from similarly being run over.

If you decide to go camping at Terrace Pond which is accessible from the road, you could be joined by two park rangers at night. Only the next morning you will find out that they were the ghosts of two park rangers who died there in 1939.

The Druidic temple

On the south side of the reservoir is a strange stone building. Legend says that it is the site where local Druids conducted their rituals. If you go there at the wrong time, or are too curious, you may end up being a part of the ceremony.

The stone building was actually an old iron smelter which was left over during the American Revolutionary War inthe 18th century. There is no evidence that it has ever been used by mysterious Druids.

Cross Castle

In 1905, Richard Cross, a local businessman built a castle on high land near the reservoir. Later it fell into ruin after being partially destroyed after a fire.

It is said that Satanists use the area for nefarious purposes – often involving human sacrifices. Grafitti in the castle give credance to the satanic legend as it makes direct references to the master of evil.

Some visitors to the castle ruins have told stories of bruises suddenly appearing on their bodies, going into seizures and having strange visions. Could these be the result of demonic forces, or could they be evidence of unsettled spirits?

The Mysterious Ice Man

In May 1983, a cyclist noticed a number of vultures above an area in the woodland. Being curious he went to investigate and discovered that it was a human body attracting the attention.

What was unusual was that the autopsy found that the man had ice crystals in the blood vessels. Pathologists concluded that someone had frozen his body after death in an attempt to mislead investigators into believing he died at a later time than he actually did.

The man was identified as someone connected to Mafia activities and in 1986 Richard Kullinski confessed to killing the man as a hitman for the mob. He became known as ‘The Iceman’ because he confessed to killing hundreds of others and he left them all in the same frozen state.

He pled guilty to five of the murders and received two life sentences, which ended with his death in March 2006.

Is Tuen Mun Road Haunted?

On October 11, 2010, in Ghosts & Hauntings, by James

If you are planning a trip to Hong Kong, you really should take a drive along Tuen Mun Road, one of Hong Kong’s oldest major motorways which runs from Tuen Mun to Tsuen Wan.

Not only will you enjoy the scenery, but you may also get a chance to encounter something different.

Hazards such as narrow carriageways and blind spots are more frequent than on modern motorways and this combined with the heavy traffic often results in accidents. Such is the case of Tuen Mun Road which is one of the biggest killer roads in Hong Kong. But not all the deaths and accidents are explained away so easily. According to locals, many of these are caused by ghosts.

What would you do if you were driving along, minding your own business, when suddenly something pops up into the middle of the road? Apparently this is precisely what these ghosts do – appear out of nowhere right in front of you. The result of swerving out of the way has the unfortunate result of real collisions happening.

This strange phenomenon has not only been reported by locals, but also by tourists who have not heard of the ‘ghost theory’ before.

Exactly who the ghosts were is not known, but local rumour has it that the number of these ghosts are increasing due to the increasing number of deaths taking place. Could it be that the original ghost was lonely?

It may be worth checking the terms of your car insurance before making the trip…
